L'élaboration de "Chapeaux de Panama" est un légat et une tradition: à travers l’apprentissage du père et l’enseignement aux fils et aux petits-fils, de simples touffes de paille se transforment en chapeaux d'une finesse inégalée. Le cycle se répète, génération après génération Cuenca, à Montecristi et dans dls peuples voisins, en Equateur.

Nos artisans prennent attention aux facteurs fondamentaux pour élaborer un chapeau de qualité :
  • La qualité de la paille Toquilla utilisée, qui dépend de sa variété et des soins pris pendant son traitement et manipulation.
  • L'habileté de chaque personne qui le tresse (toujours exclusivement à la main).
  • La finition et le modèle du chapeau.

Histoire du Chapeau de Panama

La matière première pour l'élaboration des célèbres chapeaux de Panama, est la feuille de palmier "Cardulovica Palmata", communément connue sous le nom de "de Paille Toquilla".

Cette plante est cultivée principalement dans les parties montagneuses de la Côte et de l'Est équatoriens, dans les provinces de Manabí, Guayas, Esmeraldas et Morona Santiago.

Quand les conquérants espagnols arrivènt à ce qu’aujourd’hui sont les provinces Guayas et Manabí sur la côte équatorienne, ils ont vu des indigènes utilisant des chapeaux de paille qui couvraient leurs oreilles et leur col. Ces chapeaux semblaient des « coiffes », comme celles qui utilisent les religieuses ou les veufs en Europe. Les conquérants ont alors appelé ces chapeaux « Toquillas » et la paille avec laquelle ils sont faits, comme "Paille Toquilla".

Selon la légende, ce chapeau autochtone a obtenu son nom quand Teddy Roosevelt a participé à l'inauguration du Canal de Panama (1913). Pendant l’événement, il a reçu comme cadeau un chapeau de paille équatorien, et sans savoir sa vraie origine, il le mentionna comme Chapeau de Panama.

Dans la période de 1800 à 1900, le chapeau de paille eut un grand développement et sa présence au niveau mondial fut chaque fois plus notoire, le présent dans des événements comme la fièvre d'or de la Californie ou l'exposition de Paris en 1900.

Nous savons aujourd'hui que le "Chapeau de Panama" est fait en Équateur. Les secrets pour l'élaboration de ce chapeau, passent de génération, en génération et actuellement il est toujours fait à la main, principalement dans la région de Cuenca et de Montecristi.

Chaque chapeau est unique, totalement artisanal, ce pourquoi il doit être bien soigné.
