La confezione dei "Cappelli di Panama" é una ereditá e una tradizione: imparare dal padre, insegnare ai figli e nipoti, è così, che giorno dopo giorno, mucchietti di paglia diventano finissimi cappelli. Il ciclo si ripete, per generazioni a Cuenca, Montecristi e nei paesi vicini.

I nostri artigiani priorizzano la loro attenzione ai fattori fondamentali per la confezione di un cappello di qualità:
  • Qualità della paglia "toquilla" impiegata, che dipende dalle diversità e dalla cura nel suo trattamento e manipolazione.

Storia del Cappello di Panama

La materia prima per l'elaborazione dei famosi cappelli di Panama, è la foglia di palma "Carludovica palmata ", più nota con il nome di "Paglia Toquilla".;

Questa specie viene coltivata soprattutto nelle regioni di montagna della zona costiera e l'est ecuadoriano, nelle provincie di Manabí, Guayas, Esmeraldas e Morona Santiago.

Quando i conquistatori spagnoli arrivarono a ciò che oggi sono le provincie di Guayas e Manabi sulla costa ecuadoriana, videro negli indigeni del posto l'impiego dei cappelli di paglia che coprivano sia il collo che le orecchie. Questi cappelli sembravano "Tocas"(veli), come quelli utilizzati dalle suore o vedove in Europa, allora li chiamarono come "Toquillas" e la paglia con cui venivano fatti come "Paglia Toquilla".

Secondo la leggenda questo cappello autoctono ebbe il suo nome quando Teddy Rossvelt partecipò all'inaugurazione del Canale di Panama (1913), ricevendo come omaggio un cappello di paglia ecuadoriano, e senza conoscerne la provenienza, ringraziò per l'omaggio chiamandolo "Cappello di Panama"

Nel periodo dal 1800 al 1900 il cappello di paglia ebbe un grande sviluppo e la sua presenza a livello mondiale fu ogni volta più vistosa, giacché fu presente in momenti storici come la febbre dell'oro e l'esposizione di Parigi del 1900.

Sappiamo oggi che il "Cappello di Panama" è fatto in Ecuador. I segreti della confezione di questo cappello sono tramandati di generazione in generazione e attualmente è manufatto dagli artigiani, principalmente di Cuenca e Montecristi.

Ogni cappello è unico, totalmente artigianale e quindi richiede di una particolare cura.
